This will be the cheapest to purchase DB9 for a good amount of time, overpriced or not. I can't even imagine potential problems at 100k miles.
Tavarish should put this on the FP.
I plan on owning an Aston before age 30, but probably not if I own a Challenger before age 18.

I think the main issue I'd foresee is transmission trouble, plus all the little stuff you get with expensive, complex cars. It will be an extremely expensive car to run.

I honestly think that we underestimate super car reliability. They have to be built to handle SO MUCH power. Yeah, silly shit happens with electronics. Maintenance is expensive. But I think if you keep up on them properly, they're good for 150k at least just like the average plebeian auto.

Actually they generally require a full engine rebuild before 150k. Several >100k examples for sale have had this done.

Don't know how it's holding up, looks to be nice still from the pictures but I have no idea how much life is left in it without major repairs.

It completely depends on the car, also. Think of it this way: a $10k engine rebuild on a $250k+ car is only 4% the original cost of the vehicle. A $1200 transmission on a standard car is also 4% of the cost of a $30k vehicle. The fact that the car needs an engine rebuild as part of routine maintenance isn't that crazy of an idea. Yeah, most cars don't eat their transmissions either, but I can't imagine that any car doesn't need a $1200 repair at some point, Lexus and Toyota excluded.

That's true, although I imagine a professional engine rebuild is more than $10k. Plus the OP is looking at a $30k example, which means such engine work could easily be 50% of the purchase price.

Why do you tell me about these things? I don't need this temptation! I'm in the market to buy a new car next year...
/Off to look at other used Astons....

dont these cars use some standard manual found in a hundred different makes/models?
like any MT it will need a clutch job soon, if it hasnt had it done already. that will likely be at least a 5k job, but shouldnt be unforeseen or unexpected.
its going to be the unique AM parts that will push the running costs higher.
also, dont know if the link is wrong, but when i click, the posting says $35k, not 29. maybe they realized a sub 30k db9 was just crazy?

Ah teenage automotive aspirations :)
This is a losing proposition, not only because Astons are not particularly reliable, but also because parts for this will be so rare. Even if you have the know how to maintain it, when something goes wrong you can't go aftermarket or junkyards for replacements. Something as simple as a radiator will be 4 figures.
U want an easy V12 experience, u might as well get in cheap and easy with an old 600 Benz. Many of the same problems, just less extreme with a lower overall cost. The market is not done.... if a 10 year old car is marked down 90% by price guides AND the market it's for a very good reason.

ZF conventional 6 speed auto with a lot of delicate electronics that have a lot of awkward sometimes unfixable glitches. You get a lot of results, mostly electronics related, when you google db9 gearbox problems.
Even a $35k DB9 is crazy cheap though. Cheapest here are around £30'000 which is a lot more then $35k.

are those glitches unique to the zf in astons? or do they come up in other cars that use the same transmission?
i guess the underlying question is... why would anyone incorporate a bunch of potentially disastrous electronics into a manual transmission, a component which by now should benefit from decades (a century?) of engineering history?

I can't say I've ever looked into it, the switches at least will be aston and I've read those can fail.
It's a normal torque converter auto actually, with electronic control so you can shift with the paddles.

Again, it depends entirely on the car and how you look at it.

Very true. I was just considering it in the context of the OP purchasing a cheap one and running it as a DD.

Got 2 pay da cawst, 2 be da bawse.
"Deals" like this don't excite me anymore. U trade a high price of entry for the looming spectre of 5 figure repair costs and generally high running costs from stuff like 10 MPG highway mileage and $2000 tires.
That 30K would go better to something like an old beater 350Z or M3 or something with a sick exhaust setup. A Z with a true dual setup sounds like a 911. A Z with the HR motor, long tubes and a true dual exhaust sounds damn near like an old GT3. Can rev to 8 safely too.

Yeah they don't seem to understand that since even though you can "manually" select the gear with the paddles, it isn't actually a manual.

Just lazy. The transmission on these cars is a rear wheel drive transaxle arrangement. I'm pretty sure the recommended way to service the power train in any major way is to detach the body from the frame. Although it's easier than it sounds ( something like ~12 bolts) it's definitely major work. I was at the Aston Martin factory in Gaydon in January.
